The Black-necked Stilt is a research in contrasts. Its shiny black wings and again oppose the white breast, and each are accentuated by lengthy, shiny pink legs. Undisturbed, stilts wade by means of shallow wetlands and flooded fields with a cautious grace. When disturbed throughout the breeding season, nonetheless, all semblance of grace disappears. Agitated stilts yap incessantly, dive at predators, and feign mortal accidents. (from Birds of the World)

My private “Lifer” Black-necked Stilt goes method again to my first birding subject journey for my faculty Ornithology class to the San Luis NWR in Merced County in 1985. Outdoors of the US, I’ve seen them in Mexico (Cozumel Island) and in Belize, Guatemala and in Costa Rica alongside the Tárcoles River.
