MANILA, Philippines — Opposition lawmakers have requested the Home of Representatives to look into the “adversarial impacts” of a latest Supreme Courtroom ruling permitting industrial fishing in municipal waters.
ACT Academics Rep. France Castro, Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, and Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel filed on Jan. 28 Home Decision No. 2202 asking the committee on aquaculture and fisheries sources to look into the matter.
The decision was prompted by the Supreme Courtroom resolution in August 2024 concerning a ruling of the Malabon Regional Trial Courtroom permitting Mercidar Fishing Corp. to fish inside municipal waters and nullifying some provisions of the Fisheries Code.
The Malabon courtroom allowed industrial fishing in municipal waters deeper than seven fathoms (12.8 meters) whereas the excessive tribunal rejected the petition for evaluation of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Assets (BFAR) due to a tardy pleading.
Earlier this month, BFAR requested the excessive courtroom to remand the case to the Malabon courtroom due to its “far-reaching penalties” to useful resource administration, environmental safety, and the welfare of affected communities.
